interesting read, and yes a minivan probably isn't the best vehicle for exploring the roads marked as "4WD"", and most certainly not mid-summer...spent enough time in the desert to realize that is a bad idea

It's great that you are trying to find out where you are going beforehands. However, maps do not give you a full picture. Google Death by GPS and Death Valley Missing German. Use your common sense. Drive safely.

I would also suggest obtaining and learning to read a map atlas book.  These show dirt roads, landmarks such as mountain peaks, etc.  If you're going to drive off the pavement, you have to know where you are in a larger context.  And no, internet service is spotty at best and lacking in others

One of the best maps of Death Valley, is the AAA map of Death Valley.  It shows the route to the Saline Valley Springs as well as other interested locations to visit.  If your a member the map is free and can be picked up at any AAA office.  Happy Motoring.

Hello, I'm new to the forum, looking forward to doing a bit of travel in this area, I see here many names for different locations along the roads/trails..are there any maps hand drawn or otherwise that show the locations of the e.g.: "South Pass" etc in the area? never been, but looking forward to going...2wd VW Vanagon...
