We rode in from Big Pine and the North Pass last week on BMW GS's (R1200 & F650 Twin). After 2 nights of camping at the Middle Spring we rode out the South Pass to Lone Pine. Even with a side trips to the Upper Spring and Lower Spring the extra gas we carried wasn't needed. We drank the tap water at "Middle Spring" so the extra water we carried wasn't needed either; although we may have needed it if something went wrong. The roads were fine with the most challenging parts being a few short stretches with sand. At the time of our visit there were no significant differences between the South Pass and the North Pass in road condition or travel time. Beautiful scenery and different at both ends. Take a GPS so you don't miss the turn off to the springs. It's not obvious. I used an iPhone App called PDF Maps that worked perfectly offline and it's free! Saline Valley is a very special place that deserves to continue to be self regulated - it works!
Thanks to Eric & Tom for the cold beers.

PS - City Slickers please slow down. We were almost ran over and were clouded with dust several times.
