stopped by the upper springs, two things, barbwire has been added for the missing sections of chainlink fencing. Also it appears to be a lot traffic(pathways) through the plants that weren't there last visit 1 1/2 ago. maybe because the animals had free reign

SPA recently wrote to the chief ranger in Furnace Creek regarding the removal of the fence at the Upper Warm Springs. The fence's removal was not authorized by the Park Service, and is being investigated.

The following is an except of Ranger Pennington's letter to SPA:

I sent Ranger Dave Brenner out to investigate this and other issues brought
to the park's attention by other Warm Springs users.  The missing fence is
being investigated as a theft of government property and one lead is being
followed up on.  As an interim measure, Ranger Brenner and Lizard Lee
replaced the missing chain link section with a 3-4 strand wire fence.

"If you or anyone in the Saline Valley user community have any information
as to who may be responsible for the theft, please give me a call at the
number below.

Based on the conversation with some folks who just came back from the trip, who based their knowledge on the conversation with somebody who just went there himself, Lizard Lee & a ranger fixed the fence. Kudos to both.

Just a thought, possibly some one took it down to drag the road, look along the side of the road, may still be around??
We used chain fence at Crestview, works ok, not the Saline one though.

The fence was placed around the springs long ago when pup fish were introduced to the pool. It was either to help keep the pup fish from escaping, or more likely to keep burros out and prevent them from fowling the water. Back when it was installed, there was a water tank outside the fence to provide water for wildlife. That tank has long since disappeared. It is probably appropriate for the fence to be gone and the spring become available as a water source for animals. It is not appropriate for someone to just go in and tear things down and make off with materials. SPA will make inquiries to the Park Service to find out what is going on and look into the matter should that be appropriate.

Sam, sounds like the mystery should be solved first before you think about stringing up new fence...otherwise you might as well just give the money to the perp and save the labor of putting it up. FD

Can somebody please take lots of pictures on your next visit? Should we pass a hat to collect $$$ to repair? It seems to be a good early Spring project

The posts are there, the chain link is gone from the front part only. The springs were in fine shape yesterday.

Seems to be the work of nps restoring the desert to its original condition.

Scrappers going for the metal?  Kind of a long way to go for that.  Did they take the posts too?  Maybe someone wanted a free fence.

I saw it also, not only down, but gone. Surprisingly the burrows have not done any damage to the actual spring and associated pool(s). They've got a dry wallow going about 20 feet from the pool, but for some reason are (apparently) staying away from the immediate spring. Looks like its been down for a while. FD

4 reliable eyewitness accounts confirmed that a large portion of the fence around the natural springs is gone. Does anybody have any ideas what has happened and who done it?
